General information

The BDPA starts in the Campobasso provincial library "P. Albino" as the first tool for the digital information preservation and its own evaluation. As the traditional library was born to the aim of preserving, evaluating and providing access to the tangible information objects, as the digital library is proposed to have the same aims relating to the digital information objects.

In the 1997, the provincial library "P. Albino" started a project for digitazing the its own most valuable holdings and gave to the users a virtual library (BV) access, that marshal both the digitized immages and digital descriptive data. The BV made more accessible the valuable materials, activating a digital access to the documents, augmenting the consulting opportunity and contributing to the their own preservation and diverting them from the direct access.

The BDPA doesn't substitute the BV, but integrates the access potential and values of the contained documents and information, through the implementation of a metadata structure in which digital data are gathered, transformed in objects, made accessible as resources, naming by a digital toponimus, restructured as quality digital information that evalues and eases the use, the publication and the digest of the digital knowledge. The ambitious objective is proposing a metadata architecture and lying the foundation for a digital information infrastructure.

The BDPA basic architecture is composed by structural elements built on an object model, which implements metadata structures that preserve the object's digital nature, in the long term. The used structure of descriptive, administrative and technical metadata for the digital objects, refers to many standards, both international (DC, METS, MIX) and national (MAG), tailoring the adequate arrangements to meet the holdings requirements.

The used XML technology, makes this structure robust and, at the same time, flexible and open to the future restructuring adjustments and to the integrations of other structure and other information object's type.

The BDPA, was inspired by the Semantic Web (WS) and aims at implementing the different stratified technology, that provide a structure to the documents and make them independent from the support, contributing to the digital information preservation in the long term and accompany the information society on the passage to the knowledge society.
